The New Coffee
I love you Coffee, But….
Who doesn’t love a freshly brewed cup of coffee. Many of us love everything about coffee, from the aroma to the texture. There’s so many choices nowadays depending on the level of roasting and added flavors such as cinnamon, hazelnut, maple extract, coconut, etc.
Chain Coffee shops slowly made their way into our everyday lives, and for many of us we can’t seem to be able to go to work and start our day without a good cup of coffee.
The downside of drinking coffee has been a trend, but these facts seem to be drowned by its benefits and the fact that we are already in love with it. Among the benefits of drinking coffee, it is known to protect against liver diseases such as cirrhosis, lower incidence of Parkinson’s disease and the prevention of diabetes. Coffee is also a source of antioxidants and as we all know it can give us a nice boost of energy to go about our day.
In contrast, the downside of drinking coffee can affect you fertility, both for men and women it can negative effects such as causing hormonal imbalance, robbing the body of calcium (necessary fetal nutrient) and making the body too acidic ( causes alkaline imbalance in the vaginal and uterine areas). Doctors recommend steering away from coffee if you have high blood pressure and anxiety or even pre-anxiety conditions since it can worsen the situation.
Nowadays many of us suffer from high levels of stress, and anxiety has become a very common problem. It is hard to stay focused when anxiety strikes, nevertheless many people ignore the signs. Your daily habit of drinking coffee can be working against you. Are we addicted to coffee? As a society I believe we are, living in New York, where everything moves fast makes us think we need the coffee stimulant to keep going, coffee can really aggravate your stress and anxiety. Maybe we need to sit back and replace coffee with a healthier option.
Want to try some alternatives? Herbal Coffee is a growing trend, which is primarily made of Chicory Root. Flavor wise is only slightly different than coffee, there’s a variety of flavors available such as French Roast. Chicory Root Coffee has outstanding health benefits:
- It’s a great aid to eliminate stress and reduce anxiety.
- It contains anti-inflammatory properties.
- Boosts immune system.

The only Chicory downside is that it should be avoided during pregnancy, if taken in small doses it can have benefits but in larger doses it triggers uterine contractions, which can put your health and the fetus at risk.
New studies state that Chicory root can help with weight loss by reducing appetite. It also contains vitamins and minerals such as Magnesium, Potassium, Vitamin B6, Phosphorous, Vitamin C, etc.
I decided to try Chicory Coffee, it happened almost by accident when I was looking to buy a Decaf blend at a organic store. A bag of Caffeine Free called my attention and I grabbed it.
Without realizing it I had bought Herbal Coffee made of Chicory and decided to brew it right away, the info on the back of the bag stated it is not real coffee but it tastes a lot like it and it listed its many benefits. To my surprise I felt great, I had no jitters at all; yet felt energized, no anxiety, and even my stomach felt amazing. I could still enjoy the roasty taste without the downsides. I was happy with my purchase since after further research I also found that decaf has basically the same effects as regular coffee.
Theres isn’t many coffee shops that offer Herbal Coffee, specially the big chains. Some smaller coffee places do sell it but it is harder to find.
In NYC you can find chicory coffee blends in New Orleans inspired Cafés, but most of them will be a blend with regular coffee.
You can also buy Chicory Coffee online to make at home, among the most popular brands:
If you love to try new things and suspect coffee isn’t benefiting you anymore I recommend trying Chicory Coffee.
